The whole camping ground seemed to be awash with wailing sirens. That’s possibly what woke everyone up – first the clamour, followed by the bright lights: blue, flashing lights like whirlpools of angry, luminous water. Children were whooping and screaming with excitement, babies were crying in fear, and adults were appraising the night attire of their fellow campers.

Carrie let out a moan; she was really very tired. She was still half asleep as she lifted herself up on her elbows, keeping her eyes closed against the brightness that was trying to penetrate her lids. She blindly felt around the airbed for Ian’s body and when she found it she shook him soundly. He moaned. Carrie tried to speak but her voice was groggy, her throat dry. She coughed and managed to let out a croak.

‘Please, Ian, you need to wake up, something’s going on out there.’ When there was still no response, she sat up more fully and opened her eyes – and looked straight into the face of a stern police officer. She screamed.

Ian, comatose next to her, moaned once more and then mumbled, ‘Later, Carrie.’

The policeman coughed. ‘I’m sorry to disturb you, madam, but we’ve received a complaint.’

Carrie shook her head, trying to understand. ‘A complaint? What’s it to do with us? What kind of complaint?’ She really just wanted him to go away and leave them alone.

The officer stared at Ian as though willing him awake. ‘Could you waken your husband, boyfriend, whatever, please? We need to have a word with him, with you both.’

‘I’m trying, but he’s out cold.’ Carrie gave Ian a rough shake to prove her diagnosis and he immediately jumped up, alert.

‘What? What is it? What’s going on?’

The policeman removed his hat, coughing slightly while doing so, and indicated Ian’s state of undress by ostentatiously looking away from him. Ian looked down and then quickly covered his erect penis.

Deeming it safe to return his gaze, the policeman looked back in Ian’s direction and continued. ‘Perhaps if you could both come outside, please? As soon as you’re ready.’ He backed out of the tent as though leaving royalty, although in reality there was no other way for him to get out.

When Ian and Carrie exited their tent, it was to a gathering crowd of curious onlookers. The motley group had formed a semi-circle around Carrie and Ian’s tent and a collective intake of breath could be heard as the two stepped into view. Carrie held onto Ian’s arm and positioned herself behind him.

‘All right, all right, the show’s over,’ the officer announced. He made shooing gestures but no one paid any attention. Having been so rudely awakened those gathered appeared in no hurry to return to their beds. From the safety of Ian’s back, Carrie scanned the crowd, trying to ascertain what was going on. Some woman was passing out mugs of tea. Albert and Gladys were standing just to Carrie’s left, looking concerned. Carrie tried to catch Gladys’s attention but the old woman was determinedly avoiding eye contact.
